Ballacolla is situated at the junction of the Durrow to Borris-in-Ossory road with the Abbeyleix to Rathdowney road. It is a small village located at the crossing of two routes extending up to a mile out the four roads.

The official name in Irish of the village is “Baile Cholla” or Ballacolla – the townsland of the Callow and Sedgy Grass. According to the Down there was a ruined castle in Ballacolla in the 17th century and at that time fourteen families lived in the village.

The village comprises essentially of a loose collection of small scale buildings becoming denser and more organised at the centre. On the outside you see the rolling fields, stone walls, hedges and large plantation of trees on all approach roads.
