One of our objectives is that in time a bicycle hire, canoe hire and bicycle repair shop will open in our locality to serve the needs of the tourists and to create employment. Our area offers some of the most beautiful walks including Cullahill Mountain Walk, Leafy Loop Walk, Grantstown Lake Wood, Heywood Gardens and the MacGiolla Phadraig Way Walk to the visitors and with the addition of a cycle trail the tourist appeal will be broadened.
Our proposed Cycle Trail will present tourists with another opportunity to explore the countryside. This trail will travel through the villages and towns of Cullahill, Ballacolla, Ballinakill, Attanagh and Durrow all of which have services (Accomodation, Food and Drink). Map Boards will also be installed in each location. The entire trail is 48.4km but can be done in three shorter stages. There is an added 8.16Km loop of the Cullahill Mountain with the close proximity to the already established Kilkenny Cycle Trail (at one point 2.8Km). Tourists will have the added opportunity to explore villages such as Gathabaun, Lisdowney, Freshford and Ballyragget.
We are applying to Laois Partnership for funding for the following regarding the Cycle Trail Project:
14 – 700mm x 200mm Double Sided Fingerposts
44 – 900mm x 300mm Double Sided Fingerposts
32 – 450mm x 600mm Confirmatory Signs
42 – Gal. Poles
also installation of all.
Without financial assistance of Laois Partnership and our various fundraising efforts this project will not go ahead.
