The WoodenBridge Paddlers are the first and only canoe club in Co. Laois and have been in existance since the late 1990’s with their first official outing being recorded by local press on 30th April 1999. The club set up home at the Wooden Bridge which spans the river Erkina in the townsland of ballybooden which lies equal distances from the villages of Durrow, Cullahill, and Ballacolla.
Club equipment was acquired from funding from the sports capital programme, Laois sports partnership along with support from Laois County Council. The club have held many fundraising events which have aided many organisations including The Cuisle Centre, Dove House,People with disability in sport, LOFFA, People in need, Harps Camogie Club, The Makebelievers and Friends of Simon.
Events held during the year are the very popular raft race, the juvenile regatta held in conjunction with the Durrow Festval and The Boat challange which is held as part of National Trails day in October. The group have been actively involved with other groups including Durrow Scouts, Beavers and Cubs, South Laois Tourism, Durrow Development Forum where we have taken part in event such as St. Patricks Day Parade, Pride Of Place competition and the Howya festival. We have also assisted Kilkenny Aqua Canoe Club in providing pleasure trips for The Chernobyl Children . The club have also received honours from Laois Co Community forum for our contribution to the local community.
Club members have taken part in events on many rivers including The Barrrow, Nore, Liffey, Boyne, Corrib and The Tay River in Scotland. With many members demonstrating a willingness to upskill , the future looks bright. Plans are also afoot to introduce the sport of canoe polo to the river Erkina, this will present another opportunity for all to explore what our rivers have to offer.
