MacGiollaPhadraig/Fitzpatrick Way Walk

The MacGiollaPhadraig Way  (Linear 17km Grade A walk) With start point at Durrow and Cullahill Co. Laois or Gathabawn, Co. Kilkenny) is way marked traverses the many  Failte Ireland approved routes including the scenic Ballagh Hill, Cullahill Mountain Walk and the Gathabawn Loop. The name MacGiollaPhadraig (Irish for Fitzpatrick) is strongly associated with this particular area as nearby Cullahill Castle built in 1425 was the stonghold and residence of Cormac MacGiollaPhadraig first Lord Baron of upper Ossary. This this day many of the MacGiollaPhadraig clan still reside along this delightful walking route. Cullahill Mountain boasts spectular scenery where seven Counties along with the Commeragh, Galtee, Slieve Bloom and The Blackstairs Mountains come into view, also at this point a monument bush stands to commemorate the spot where legend has it Brian MacGiollaPhadraig was slain by Cromwell’s men.

South Laois Tourism hold regular walks on the MacGiollaPhadraig Way including Easter Monday and October Bank Holiday Monday.
